I've had a crown replaced and at the end of the process the dentist gave me my dental impressions and asked me to sign for them.

When did they start doing this and why? Am I supposed to keep them? They are about the lowest tech form of ID I can imagine!

Anyone else walking round with plaster casts of their mouth?
Nope - my dentist used a 3D scanner rather than plastercasting - I have some interesting X-Rays in my email archive though ...
