Indian subcontinent won independence in August 1947 from the British with the creation of two nation state - one with a Muslim majority (Pakistan) and the other with a Hindu majority (India). East Pakistan become a new state called Bangladesh in 1971.

If Pakistan are not separated from India in 1947, 510 million Muslims in the total population of 1.7 billion in undivided India would mean that Muslims would have been only 30% of the total population.

India has a Hindu majority, the Hindu religion's main tenant is one of non violence and equality to all . Most Hindus do not eat meat as they see it as cruel and violent towards animals. Similar philosophy applies to their attitude to other people's religions.
