I don't know much about tablets, Susan. I've got one which I bought as a final clearance offer in Sainsbury's ages ago but I find that it's more trouble than it's worth, so I hardly ever use it. (I don't have a proper smart phone either; if I need mobile internet access I carry my netbook with me).
It's unfortunate that Tesco discontinued the Hudl though, as countless reviews praised it for offering high quality at low cost. Without spending a fortune (or risking some obscure Chinese brand that there seem to be no valid reviews for), you're really stuck with the Amazon Fire as the only choice of a decent (and inexpensive) tablet.
Looking through recent reviews (on websites which I trust) leads me to the Amazon Fire HD 8 as possibly the best tablet for you:
