I have at the moment three steam irons. Two were discarded because after a time they leaked water onto the item I was ironing. The third one has now started to do the same thing. Does anyone know why this happens and how to stop it? Not everything is ironed satisfactorily without the steam and I am reluctant to buy yet another iron. I have tried three different brands, the latest is a Philips.
Thanks everyone. My Phillips says not to use anything in the water chamber but water but I am going to have a go with a descaler anyway. As if ironing wasn't a big enough chore!
I stopped using the steam facility on my irons many, many moons ago and just have a spray bottle of water to hand. In my opinion it works better than the steam from the iron ever did and you don't get leakage or a furred up iron.
If you live in a hard-water area, it can be a good idea to buy and use distilled or de-ionised water in a steam iron (mixed 50/50 with your tap water)....
