Reading Glasses And Scratches

I only use cheap, plastic, set magnification, reading glasses that I buy from chemists or supermarkets. They get scratched very easily. If I splash out and get proper glasses from an optician will they suffer from the same defect ? Is it possible to get ones that are particularly scratch resistant?

You can get scratch resistant lenses at all opticians as far as I know.

However opticians do offer scratch-resistant coatings on all of the glasses that they sell.

Also if you get your eyes tested and get a copy of the prescription then you can order glasses on line. Eg glasses direct. It is a good idea to have an eye test from time to time as the tests they do can test for other things like glaucoma, macular degeneration etc

Scratchability will depend on what the lenes are made from. The lightweight plastic more vulnerable to scratches than heavier glass but less risk from cracks. Endorse all above, but even if you pay for scratch resistant coatings, try not to test them with emery paper.

I used to work in an opticians...one you "should go to"!! without naming names. The scratch resistant lenses are precised that "resistant". That does not mean you will not get any scratches at all. We used to regularly deal with enraged customers with scratches on their glasses.
