Are Best Friends In The Sense Of Being Able To Share Your Deepest Feelings Mostly A Female Thing

Only it seemed from sqad's post that men and women may have a very different definition of what a friend is. So the whole best friend thing .... men have best friends defined by amount of time together (quantity) and female have friendships where the depth of the relationship is key. (Quality) or is this too simplistic. It probably is but looking back on those I have known it seems a recurring pattern.

I have 1 very special friend who lives currently round the corner from me, she did move back to England for 3 years but it did not stop her being my best friend.
I have a group of close friends that Ialso happen to work with and then I have another friend that I have not seen in 4 years but we pm each other most days and I value her honesty and integrity and hope to meet her again soon.

I recently had a bit of a crisis, and it was not something I could talk to my male friends about. Fortunately I had a good female friend, who was incredible and fery supportive.

I am biased as my best friend is female. To have a best friend, one needs to be a best friend. The spirit of good friendship is to be there for someone, through all eventualities and circumstances. Knowing that someone will always make themselves available to you when you are in a desperate situation is of great comfort. Non-judgemental but able to say what she/he really thinks. If I were to lose my best friend it would feel like a close family bereavement.

I'm actually quite a private person and rarely speak when I'm upset. I can speak about it later when I've processed my thoughts. It's nice though to know I have a handful of people I can talk to daily if need be.
