Loft Water Tanks

Like 60% of huseholds I have a loft tank which feeds water to te bathroom (bath, shower, wash basin and lavatory). It is plastic wih a cover, but there seems always to something floating, dust or spiders webs etc. I am concerned that this may be a heath hazard, but I am told that header tanks are cosidered to be safe and accepted as a potable water supply. Is this the case and should we considerthema health hazard. And if they what could we do, other than replumb for a direct water system, to ensure that they pose no real helath hazard?

the real answer is that they are safe-ish. provided the cover is intact they arent too bad. but they are NOT a potable water supply. this is the feed to your kitchen tap, which will come direct from the mains. These systems were designed for ablutions, not drinking.

My Father also forbade us kids to drink from the bathroom taps, especially the hot water tap, because of the water being stored in the tank and the debris floating in it. Brushing teeth and washing was ok, but only to drink from it as a last resort.

I advise the same.
