I suggest the punctuation can be improved- maybe a colon instead of a comma after the first 'have'. One 'was' could be replaced by a 'would'.
But it all sounds as if it could be written in a more streamlined way.

I was baffled by things like "I started to do some things I should have", which should presumably be "shouldn't have", and "it was pointless that we [he?] even came after me". But I agree with Prudie, "was" isn't overused here; it reads okay even if the meaning is hard to fathom.
