Lawnmower Starts But Runs Slow

I have a petrol lawnmower with a Tecumseh carburretor, I cleaned the points and carburretor and the lawnmower starts every first or second pull but it runs at an idle speed instead of revving when the lever is pulled

Have you re-connected the throttle cable correctly?

Hi 1ozzy, I assume so, I checked it on the web and assume that it was correct but it doesn't rev up at all.

Have you checked that the butterfly on the carb is opening, stan ?.

The butterfly is opening and closing fine but I have just realised that the throttle control appears to be working in reverse, i.e. when it is put to fast it stops, and when it is put to stop it runs at an idle speed.
