I have some dodgy relatives, can anyone tell me if an executor can fiddle a will?

Well some people can fiddle anything, so an executor is no exception.

It's more likely to be 'losing' valuable items or failing to account for money than actually misrepresenting the will to relatives that haven't seen it (since it does become a public document after probate).

You can sue the executor if he fiddles it and you can prove it - but that's always difficult with a relative, even a dodgy one.

If it worries you, then why have family as executors? There's a lot to be said for using a professional. (Apart from having to pay them to do it!)

The problem with professional executors is that the estate can pay very high fees for their work. Historically, I understand some banks have been very bad at this - on occasions charging a % of the value of the estate without much regard to the amount of work done. It might be best to use reliable relatives, if necessary with a solicitor as a joint executor.
