Exploding Light Bulbs

Every so often, after I have boiled the kettle in the kitchen, and switched it off, and then moved to the living room and switched the centre ceiling light on, (three bulbs) one of them explodes violently, showering the room with glass and tripping the fuse.
Why would that happen? The kettle is already off and although it is not a big house, I have to walk from the kitchen, through the dining room and hall before I turn on the living room light.

Coincidence. Are you using cheap bulbs?

What type of bulbs are they?

I have R63 spotlight bulbs in my kitchen (6 of them) and living room (3 of them) and have some of those explode every now and again.

In fact we get through these bulbs at an alarming rate (even long life ones fail quite quickly) so I am thinking of changing the light fittings.

Do you have R63?

A lot of cheap, inferior bulbs around these days, Jenny. From China mainly, I think.

Wiring shouldn't normally affect them, but bad connections can result in bulbs overheating. If it keeps happening in the kitchen, then I'd consider replacing the fitting.

Also, the kettle is on a different circuit. Probably just coincidence, as Obit has said.

I hope it's not an energy saving light bulb that's popping - they contain mercury and you should clear the room to allow it to settle!

Not an answer but we've just had one blow up just switching the light on. Don't ask what sort it was as it has been destroyed by the explosion.
