New Laptop Help Please

I have a new laptop and thought it might be possible to transfer some of the stuff on my old machine straight onto the new one?

I'm a total dunce at most technology..can anyone advise me please...thank you

I probably know about as much of you re technology, but this is how I would do it. If you've got an extra external hard drive then connect this to your old laptop with a USB lead, then just copy/paste stuff from old laptop onto the external hard drive, then connect the hard drive to your new laptop and copy/paste it onto new laptop.
No doubt someone else will tell you the proper way, but good luck anyway.
