for example, if they are in private school, can you choose how many hours they do or is there a statutory minimum/? if you only want them to do part time in PS do you have to teach them the rest of the hours at home? Who checks anyway?

No, there is no regulation actually. I was home schooled and my parents left it entirely up to me once I was a very fluent reader and had covered the basics of English, Maths, Science and Humanities how many hours I did and on which subjects, and theoretically you get visited by people from the LHA occasionally but in reality they appeared twice in my entire school age life.
If they are in school they study for the time they are there.

It is recommended that they also do 15 to 20 minutes homework. This can be something as simple as reading or doing some other learning in a way that is appropriate for age.

Out of interest kvalidir, how did you get on? I have never met or spoken with anyone who was Home schooled. Did you have to take the usual exams and stuff like that? And what has been your employment life like?
No, you can either take exams or not it's entirely up to the individual, some of us did and some of us didn't depending on our future intentions. I have a lot of siblings that were also home educated and some of us have been to Uni and gained degrees and some haven't, but all are in full time employment or self employment. I'm an actress so that's a bit left of field to judge tbh, but of my siblings, one is an artist, one works in finance in the City, one got a degree which enabled him to run the country estate he now runs, one owns a cake shop and coffee house and does catering for events etc, one is a Chef and owns a gastro pub, one is a blacksmith and one was an auctioneer and silversmith until he sadly had an accident which has prevented him from working in that field. He now trades more general antiques, so although we are all very different, all of us are quite happy and very gainfully employed. I must be honest of all of the home educated kids I know I don't know any who aren't because generally they know quite early what they want to do and can concentrate their education on doing that. I'm not planning on having children however if I ever adopt I will certainly home educate, school sounds utterly awful in comparison, although that's probably an unfair assessment since you only ever hear the very bad things, but for me home education worked and I loved it.
