I will get a quote from a freind of mine who repairs pcs for a living on what he would charge
Scroll down to the bottom for prices for (what seems like) a decent repair....(and don't try to DIY!)

Thank you,Tony, gingejbee and Mikey, hope it is not an Air 2,if it is may as well buy a new one, will try Timpsons tomorrow but will wait for any reply from Tony.
The cost of repair will depend upon what's actually broken. An iPad has TWO screens. There's the LCD one which displays everything and then a clear glass one on top of it. If it's just the top glass which is broken, a repair shouldn't be too expensive but if the LCD screen underneath it is broken, then you're looking at spending a lot of money.

Thanks,Chico and everyone,Timpsons : £120,could be wrong but thought it was reasonable,an ordinary Ipad was £79,but this one is an Ipad Air 1.
Timpson's are notoriously expensive for many things (such as watch batteries, watch straps and engraving), so it might be worth checking prices elsewhere. Your local market might be a good place to try, as there's usually at least one stallholder who offers such a service.
Is it the LCD screen or the top screen? That is expensive for a top screen replacement
