Best photo editing software

What in your opinion is the best photo editing package? I want to start jazzing up photos, adding things, removing things, etc! So what shall I go for? Simple to use packages are especially welcome as I'm not very technical!!

Adobe Photoshop is the best. But it's probably out of your price range if you just want to do fairly basic things.

Photoshop Elements is a good substitute; it's essentially the same thing but with bits cut out. Oh, and a huge price reduction.

Neither are all that simple though. Elements may well be fine though. If you want to play about with something free for the time being, then give Google's Picassa a go.

Thanks for that, I'll play with picassa for now and try and read up on photoshop!
