Book About A German Drifter

I am trying to source a book I read many years ago about a german drifter who went from village to village. He was very ill and did not have long left to live. I think it was set at the beginning of the last century - maybe earlier. Its a thin book and for some reason I thought the author was Hermman Hesse but I cannot be exact about that. Anybody any clues to what on earth I am on about
