Not exactly new this but can anyone remember, many years ago, the BBC used to always lead into the hour with the chimes of Big Ben? I ask this because of the current work being done on it, the bell will be silent for 4 years. However, I seem to recall that back in the late fifties/early sixties, the BBC changed from Big Ben to the bell on Huddersfield Town Hall but I can't remember why. Somebody please tell me I'm not imagining this and can remember it too. Thanks.

Eddie Mair ran with this for quite a while during spring and summer on PM.
My question was and is, why not just use a recording of the chimes and save a lot of faffing about?

As far as I kow there is no bell on Huddersfield Town Hall!
Correction 'know'
so Huddersfield wins the no-bell prize then?
Boom Boom!
A little discussion here of what the BBC has done in previous times, but no mention of another bell.
