Printer problem

My hp deskjet 610c printer will not work when connected to my scanner what can i do?

I have a different printer but the same problem, I found that using a data transfer switch box cost about �5 from computer rally has worked fine, just have to remember to switch from scanner to printer or vice/versa as needed, good luck.
