Just Wondered When Men Blow Their Noses Why Do They Sound Like Foghorns?

- even when I have tried to blow my nose as load as my husband I cannot seem to manage half the volume. Is there a reason for this?

I almost never blow my nose, and if I do, it doesn't make any noise at all, apart from expelled air.

It is a mystery to me why some men do make a massive noise doing it.

I have never in my life blown my nose in front of someone else, and on the seriously rare occasion I do it, it is with a tissue or toilet paper.

That said, I do carry a clean handkerchief with me at all times which was useful when I worked as the only man in an office with twenty-three women, and there were the occasional tearful moments - theirs not mine!

Nowadays it's useful for my grandchildren to deal with sticky fingers and noes.

I think it's a form of attention-seeking; same with people who make a huge noise when they sneeze.

I strongly suspect it is because men apply far greater force than women do - both at blowing noses and coughing. The diaphragms are stronger in men plus women are often brought up to be "ladylike" and habit comes into the issue. Sneezing also usually shows up a similar difference. However, age is a strong factor - I remember as a young boy/man being similarly intrigued how some men (I was more among people my age) made a loud noise blowing their noses - now I can on occasion produce it myself ! Possibly to do with nostrils becoming less firm......

My Dad could make a fair noise with his nose blowing but my Mother's sneeze could take the thatch off a cottage.

Due to cotton fibres she inhaled at the mill.

I know of no trick that works 100%. If it's a small sneeze then pressing on the upper lip can work.

No one sneezes louder they they need to. Thoughts of seeking attention is probably the witness assuming others want the same as them.

I only know this from working in the theatre......not wishing to sneeze on stage a cast member would press the thumbnail of the left hand underneath the nail of the little finger on the right hand......x
