my home stereo system plays mp3 music it plays ok on cd blank compact disks ,would it play back the music if I copied on to a dvd disk ,would it recognise and play it

It would - but only if your stereo has a DVD-ROM drive. If it doesn't have a 'DVD' logo on the front then it's probably just a normal CD-ROM.

Yes, basically that's almost it.
The CD mechanism on most stereo systems cannot play the DVD so you could use a DVD player. There are a few alternatives, probably the best being the Linn 'Unidisc'. It plays just about anyformat disc you can think of and is very high quality.
