I've just looked at the Comet website and that quotes a typical oscillating desk fan as having a power rating of around 40W. That means it would have to run for 25 hours to use 1KWh of electrictity (which, according to my electricity bill, costs about 8p).

So, roughly, the cost of running the fan overnight would be about 3p.

brilliant, thanks chris.
Buenchico is right and this formula applies to most domestic appliances. Divide 1000 by the wattage and so a 100watt bulb can run for 10 hours using 1Kw of electricity. You need to know the price you are paying for your supply.
