One Of The Down Sides Of Technology

Whilst we all gain from the massive strives in electronic technology there are some down sides and here is one: micro cameras mounted in robe hooks.

Seems these devices are mounted in toilets or hotel rooms to spy on peoples activities, presumably whilst de-robed. Now for me I dont think I have much to worry about unless someone is planning to use the footage for a horror film but for others this must surely be a disturbing trend. Footage could be obtained, loaded on to the Internet where it will stay pretty much forever.

But is there anything that can be done? Apart from banning sales - which wont stop it.

Personally I am considerably more concerned by the smuggling of this technology into popular consumer electronics. When the Xbox One was first released, Microsoft claimed that the console could not work without a Kinect - an eye-wateringly expensive camera device that is always on, always watches, and always waits for audio input to turn the console on. It subsequently turned out that the main use for this device sitting in the living room constantly active was to monitor peoples' responses to advertising and sell that information on to third parties (just as facebook and most user-focused sites , probably including this one, does).

When XboxOne sales went through the floor, Microsoft immediately changed course - and it then turned out that magically XBones did not require a Kinect to function after all.

It's creepy and far more insidious and widespread than headline cases like this make out. This camera gadget really is just the tip of the iceberg

jno, do you mean you were not aware of these devices that are freely available on Ebay and Amazon for a start?

I agree Krom, it goes far deeper than a coat hook that, as ZM says, will mostly film the bog wall. However they are getting so small and readily available that they can be put anywhere.

And the good side of these devices is that carers of the elderly, the young and the infirm have been caught abusing people, often in their own homes.

The biggest spy device is the one that every home has and the one you take everywhere, your laptop, tablet and especially your mobile phone,if you check the small print from your mobile phone contract, websites you go to, apps you install and random weirdos who download spyware you’re pretty much watched and listened to 24 hours a day

You can only be recorded, listened to and tracked if you give certain apps the permission to do so.

Many do download apps without reading the small print and a lot of sites use cookies which use adware/spyware and stalkers/fraudsters need no permission.

I can appreciate the use of technology in care home, child care situations but other applications seem crazy. Is it necessary to have wi-fi connection to your kettle, washer, fridge to save a couple of minutes? People buy these smart gadgets then complain about privacy. The last daft thing I was was a camera in your fridge so you can check it was you're shopping. Why? We're currently having a new boiler fitted and were asked what kind of thermostat and timer we wanted, most fitters laughed about Hive, not that we wanted it but were curious about it yet people spend hundreds on them.

A camera in the fridge is a great idea, you can see the contents whilst you’re out shopping and see what you need and can have the kettle boil just as you’re getting in, with the washing machine/ oven you can wash and cook whilst your out providing you’ve clothes and food in them, you can’t control your whole house remotely these days, technology is amazing
