How long does it take the police to make enquiries into a motoring offence?

I was stopped by a policeman in my car back in March and he must have put through my car reg and as he was walking over i heard my name and address being read to him, i also heard the woman say something about failing to stop at the scene of an accident, the police officer then asked me to wait in my car while he spoke to the woman. I have not heard anything. Should i be told if the police are making enquiries? I have not had any accidents that i have failed to report.

You probably had an incident and didn`t realise it. In which case the police enquiries will be still on-going. Expect a knock on the door sometime this year, and have a case packed ready for a stretch inside.

The limitation of proceedings is six months for driving offences and similar. If you do not receive a summons signed before the six month period then you should not hear anything further. The person laying the information before the magistrates must do so within six months of the offence occuring. (You may get a summons after the six months period, but it should be signed and dated within the six months period. Wait a year as stated above then you will know that nothing further will be coming your way!

If it was me I would make enquiries to find out exactly what was going on -- I certainly would not be waiting and worrying for a year. make initial enquiries at your local police station, I am sure they will be only too happy to help or point you in the right direction.
