CVs - who owns them?

I am wondering if you have the right to ask for your CV back after you have given it to, say, a company or a recruitment agency? Would it be cheeky? Legal? I don't like the thought of my CV floating around the place, that's all,,,,,

Personal information can only be kept 6 months and cannot be passed on or something. If you sent it unsolicited though there might be a difference. I don't know the exact details but it might be worthwhile asking at your local library or council.
