I was recently given a 1950/1960s vintage Black Rabbit fur coat. I think it's beautiful, but I am unsure whether I will be viewed negatively because it is real? I feel that vintage fur is very different to new fur, as the people in the 1950s were ignorant to the cruelty that it took to get the fur, and it was completely accepted. What do you think?

Im sure that sara3 is vegan, doesn't wear any leather and even checks her salad before she eats it in case there are any slugs on it that might be harmed! The fur trade is cruel and wastefull but if the animal is killed and eaten then why waste the fur? Its the waste of life that I disagree with when animals are killed for a small part and the rest disgarded. The fur in question is an old fur and would not be supporting the modern fur trade!
ChoclatChip....don't be silly....wear the bloody thing, it's a coat for Pete's sake.

In Spain, the women wear their fur coats with pride, in the UK they tend to be more fanatical and vicious.......mrs sqad was physically attacked in Manchester 29yes ago for wearing a fur coat.

I must say, that as artificial furs are so good now, it leaves a nasty taste that animals are reared to be killed for fur, but that is not your situation in that not wearing it will serve no purpose for man or animals.
teleph0ne, opinions were asked for, so I gave mine. I don't think it was just asking for support for wearing fur.

although obviously that's what the poster wants.
It is entirely likely that you will be viewed negatively for wearing fur regardless of the origin of the coat. I would not wear real fur through choice. Wear it and see. I wager 95% of people will react negatively, some may actually react strongly.
Anyone who don't want or refuse to wear their furs I'll take them off your hands.
I have no shame in wearing them.
How can you tell the real from the fakes anyway. I wouldn't have a clue..! If I seen you in a fur coat I would presume it was fake. I'm sure there are many people like me.
I have a short rabbit jacket circa 1970, given to me by an ex's aunt, also a mink stole circa 1920, given to me by same ex's ma, I were them both on odd occassions, but a few years I sold at a boot fair for £20 a silver fox coat because I felt guilty at the time (I paid £1500 for it secondhand) I really wish I'd kept it.
I wear leather and suede coats jackets, sheepskin coat etc.
But I would not buy new fur would feel too guilty a worried about that tin of red paint.Oh I also had a full length beaver that I bought from a charity shop about 10 years ago for a tenner it was soooooooooo warm but y mate knicked it off me.
Look at facts, it is a fact that native americans, lived off the countryside as did all african tribes, eskimo's etc, & they used every part of the animal both for food & clothing. It is a fact that humankind is designed to be carnivorous. If you can eat it for goodness sake lets stop being petty & wear the fur to keep you warm.
I think it is a personal thing- personally- I would definately wear it. If we are happy to eat supermarket meat, wear makeup, (even if it says it hasn't been tested on animals, the research that made that possible was probably from cosmetics tested on animals), accept medical treatments, smoke, wear leather shoe sand bags, (sorry, I don't believe my "Jimmy Choos" or other designer brands came off the cow I ate for dinner- it would have been specially bred for the quality leather), specialist leather such as crocodile and Ostridge- which Selfridges stock even though they say they won't stock fur- like what's the difference??!, fur trim coats, shoes, boots, bags, scarves and other accessories, man made fibres which are not bio degradable and destroy the enviorent- like FAKE FUR!, etc etc etc the list is endless- thn why not wear fur? It's no worse than any of the above, yet frowned upon by some just because it is less discreet.
Country people have to lay traps for some animals or if the number of them got out of contol they would destroy cattle etc and there would be more disaster.
Have you ever worked in a chicken factory? Do you see what goes on there? Believe me, you'd never eat chicken again if you saw it.
No, there are a lot of worse things that happen in this life than wearing a beautiful fur coat- don't feel guilty, wear it with pride- I would compliment you if I saw you and you looked gorgeous- it's coming back into fashion anyway.
People that give you negative reactions should do us all a favour and go and live on a mountaintop, next to a freshwater lake with no electricity, or anything else that disturbs nature, in a hand woven tent they made from the octton they grew themselves, (or a cave). Cos unless they do, they are contributing to harming the planet, even if it is indirectly.
Oh and I forgot to mention veal, foie gras, wagu beef and other luxury meat products. People who waer leather goods are just kidding themselves if they really believe they are a by prduct of meat.
No one has the right to judge another person- we may only judge ourselves. Do what you believe is ok and not what anyone else tells you. You wouldn't get a negative reaction from most of the peope I know- unless they were a little envious!

The problem is we each have a different place where the line is...what some of us find acceptable others do not, and we all need to be respectfull of other peoples opinions as there is no wrong or right
For example. In some cultures and time periods, it was acceptable to marry and have sex with a 12 year old girl- but that is not acceptable to me.
No, you are right, I wouldn't eat dog or dolphin, but would have no problem with a juicy fillet steak- and as you say- what's the difference?
The difference is my culture, upbrringing and conditioning allows me to eat cow but not dog- it's what I'm used to. Though not a pet owner, I have seen dogs as part of people's families, I have swam and interacted with dolphins in a way which would prevent me from eating them, and I daresay if I had seen a cow in those sorts of eviroments, I wouldn't be able to eat beef- it's all relative- BUT, I don't have a problem with people eating dog or dolphin if it is their "norm" and part of their culture,- who are we to say what people can and cannot do?
We are a diverse race- with many different ideas of what is wrong ad right- isn't that what all these wars are about?- Maybe if we could just be more accepting and mindful of other peoples ideals, then there would be more peace in this world.
Judge yourself and not others- do what you think is right and respect other peoples views- that is how I live anyway.
Its more cruel to drink a glass of milk than it is to wear vintage fur.

Milking cows only make milk for the same reasons we do, for their babies. Farmers inseminate cows and once the calf is born they take it away. the cow will lactate for around 10 months and then they start the process over again. The male calves are taken away for the veal industry and the females are kept to continue production.

Everything is supposedly cruel nowadays but that's what happens when you're top of the food chain. you don't have red paint thrown at you for eating rabbit in a restaurant, so where is the harm in wearing a coat that was produced 50 years ago?
The real wasted would be to destroy it.
