What Is My Broadband Speed?

Hi,
Probably a stupid question but what is my broadband speed. When I right click my indicator that shows I am connected it says ..connection excellent 58mbps.
When I download music or film using Vuze it shows a speed of between 500kb/s and 1.2mb/s

If you Google "broadband speed test" a number of free sites come up that you can use to check it.

The 58 Mbps quoted is the maximum speed that your phone line (or cable connection) can handle. However data can't come into your computer any faster than the server sending it can pump it out.

When you use a BitTorrent client, such as Vuze, you're downloading data from the computers of other people on the internet, so the download speed you can get is limited by the upload speeds that they've got.

Further, many ISPs deliberately slow down BitTorrent traffic (or even block it altogether), as
(a) it takes resources from other users ; and
(b) such traffic is almost always illegal.

Zingo....this site has been promoted on here as pretty reliable, but you will need to use several times, at different times of the day, to get a good average speed.

It does however seem to vary depending on what device you're using. All from the same router I get about 14 on my old laptop, 32 on my phone, husband gets 37 on his new laptop.

I have had a letter from BT, telling me that my download speed will soon be up to 76 Mbps, although they are increasing my monthly bill slightly.

I have been testing my speed every day for a week but its still averaging
49 Mbps
