Ieee 1284 And 64 Bit Windows 10

I have just uncovered a printer I bought some time ago and didn't get around to putting in my system. Since I'm presently without a printer I'd like to try it out, but on unboxing it I see it has one of those old fashioned connections, which I believe is IEEE 1284.

I checked Amazon for a suitable cable to USB and see some, and only some, admit that their converter lead it isn't going to be suitable for 64 bit OP systems. No details as to why.

Anyone know if this is going to be the case for any converter cable, or whether it would be cable specific ?

I would think that specific drivers for w10 with the IEEE1284 to USB lead should do it Geezer. The second link gives some hint on what to do if you have the iee1284 already installed from prior use. The third link has a driver download but you may decide to source you own. Good Luck. A bit fiddly but we know you will crack it.

There is a Maplins a few miles away but ideally I'd rather not have to try to explain to the salefolk if possible. But I can keep that in mind if I get nowhere giving it a bash myself.

As per usual I'm not going to be in a position to do much over the weekend but I'll give the links a look.

Just a little confused that one of the cables I looked at, specifically stated it wasn't suitable for 64 bit operating systems. If it was a driver issue then how come the cable wouldn't work ?

Ah, hmm. Surely MS supplies an autodownload of a suitable driver these days, not the cable manufacturer/seller ?

Hmmm.... Cable came today so I set everything up. Somewhat annoyingly I then find an alternative socket, a square USB type right next to the IEEE 1284, That'll teach me to look at it all not see one and then become blind to any alternative there.

Printer seems to be operative despite it's age. Cartridge was ok, and I printer a test page from it. But given it's age I forwent trying the supplied CD first assuming it was probably out of date.

It all seems awkward in Win 10 but I believe I found the place where the PC looks for a new printer, but it didn't find it.

Next I tried http://hardwaredata.org which searched itself for updated and finally downloaded dfsetup.exe. Having checked it was virus free I ran it, it installed driverfinder, which apparently won't run as I don't have permission ?! I thought I was downloading a driver not a finder.

So about to revert to the supplied CD as all else has failed. Ah well...

Well it claimed to have installed the Lexmark software, but I'm not spotting any changes. Anyone any thoughts ?

I could go buy a USB cable and try that I suppose. (Annoyed I didn't spot that earlier.) Or maybe instead of getting the PC to search the network I could tell it where the printer is, but I've no idea what HCR Client Port Monitor is, and I was under the impression the LTP1: was the parallel port, which don't appear on the back of PCs any more.

Scratching my head here at present.

Thought I was getting somewhere when I discovered that if you select it, the LTP can be changed for USB001, but it doesn't offer the option of "Lexmark E210", it starts the 'E's at "E260 Class driver". So no further forward.

You might be out of luck. The E210 isn't on the list of Lexmark printers which are supported by Windows 10:

However it looks like using the Samsung ML-1210 driver might help:

Of course things are never simple when drivers are concerned though. The Samsung website says that you need to go to the HP website, which does indeed have Samsung drivers but not that one!

This though suggests that you actually need the ML-2250 driver and provides instructions for obtaining it and installing it:

Thanks for that. Just downloaded Lexmark's own local printer settings utility for it, and it says it can't find a printer.

Was rather hoping someone would say, oh you can use the Exxx one, it does much the same.

It claims that the device is not connected or power is turned off. I'll try installing "without a connected device" but suspect the problems won't have gone afterwards.

Samsung ML has appeared in the printer list. But printing a test page resulted in an error message on the screen and no page on the printer.

Wonder if buying a USB A to USB B would help.

Possibly worth a try. Some discount stores sell such cables fairly cheaply.

Just checked, the old printer had such a lead, so I snaffled it and plugged it in.

Since I have suspicions about a lack of driver, I was a little surprised to hear various pings and suchlike from the PC, but I still can't see any indication of a connected printer found. Printer add/search didn't find one either. (MS are so wonderful the search help just opened a page about bluetooth !)

Interestingly, just checked Device Manager, and 'LexmarkE210' is listed under 'Other devices' rather than any separate printer group. It's location is 'on USB Printing Support' apparently, so it seem the PC might know what it is. Definitely a driver issue as 'no driver files have been loaded for this device'.

If you go to your nearest Maplins with all the details OG, the Tech guys there will give you free advice and a solution to your needs.
It will save you faffing about.....

Thanks Rowan, not been near a Maplins yet. Although I'm unsure they will know specifically about particular drivers. If I find myself near one I'll pop in.

Meanwhile I've found a Lexmark e-mail address that I've just written to. But it was in the "shop" section so I don't know if they'll just refuse to help, or pass it over to support. Seems to me all Lexmark wish to do is international phone call support. Hoping the e-mail will get a good response.

Lexmark contact number was one of those expensive rate numbers, but I didn't need to be on the line for the whole process. Having agreed to let the support guy take control of the PC (and watching him like a hawk :-) ) the call I made could be ended.

Unsurprisingly he said that the printer was "legacy" and no longer supported (even though id only just taken it out of the box). Nevertheless he tried loads of things, including trying a Samsung driver as one of their printers was basically the Lexmark one I had.

At one time the printer seemed to take the printjob and started clicking away, but the paper never moved. (Eerily uncannily like the Canon 1550 was replacing. Maybe that tells me something, or maybe it's coincidence.)
