If you want it start backing up your stuff now including favourites or bookmarks then keep tapping Windows update till all the non win 10 stuff is installed.

You will only get it if you are on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 (not 8 but 8.1).

You will only get it if you have applied all the Windows updates, have you done that?

I am running windows 7, all updates are downloaded. Tried all that they tell you to do. Keep getting told on trouble shooter turn of pc and try later. I cannot reserve as no icon appears.

You don't have to reserve W10...you can upgrade manually from the official Windows download page....www.snipca.com. (This snipca URL comes from the latest edition of Computeractive magazine- so is completely safe!).
If anybody needs help/info about the upgrade, I can recommend the latest edition of the above magazine...it has a definitive review and a very helpful "How to upgrade without problems...step-by-step". It's issue number 456, dated 19 Aug-1 Sept.

Do you have any reason to believe that your laptop failed on the grounds of the Microsoft update site assessing that its hardware specification was insufficient to run Windows 10?

You say it is Win 7 now but did it start life as a Win XP machine? Or something even earlier than that?


I was given to understand that some form of remote hardware check is performed by the Microsoft Update site.

I recall that one of the pitfalls of upgrading hardware under Win XP is that you are only allowed 4 or 5 goes at repeating the "Activate Windows" step (set of keys icon). This is enough to allow a domestic user to replace motherboard or HDD a few times, ocer several years but not so much as to allow someone to pass the master CD around a bunch of pals.

A machine which never passed valudation at Win XP or Win 7 level, naturally, would not qualify for the freebie.

I'm not casting aspertions, merely stating the facts. If you buy second hand you have no way of knowing the machine's upgrade history, let alone the vendor's honesty level.

Win 10 is not all that. I like 7 better.
My laptop is ok but my tower pc picked up loads of viruses straight away.
Needed an IT person to clense it.lots of issues with sound and printer etc but getting there.
But at the moment I am struggling to find any advantage in upgrading!
