Hi there, not been on for a while.
My husband came home to the news yesterday that his job is up for redundancy. His company state that his job has some overlap with another role so one must be lost....
Interestingly my husband has been with this company for 3.5 year, and a new person came in 4 months ago, and it is this person whose job he is up against.. Seems a little unfair, as it not my husbands fault someone else was bought in! Anyway any thoughts on this - I assume its not last in first out anymore? Also, he was sent the letter on Friday which arrived Saturday. He had annual leave Friday which his manager knew and as we were away at the weekend only read last night. His consultation meeting is today at 12 but didn't give much notice to get a colleague or representative to accompany him. He emailed his manager to this effect. Seems a bit unfair giving him next to no notice? To add my husband has no issue at work with regards to his work or performance, if anything he goes above and beyond to his detriment it would seem.

Unless the other person has been treated exactly the same way, I think it looks like they want rid of your husband. Legal advice needed pronto.
Is this the only redundancy or is part of a wider set of redundancies?
LIFO doesn't have to be followed. It seems odd on the face of it as they could simply dismiss the newbie if they wanted to. It depneds thugh on the extent of the overlap and the details of the two current roles. Maybe they know they save more by losing you

There was one lady in accounts who apparently just went, she was made redundant apart from that no one else. The person my husband is up against has been there 4 months so is out of probation period and I understand the same process has to be followed regardless of length of service? To add too, this other person is on at least £10k more than my husband so from a cost point of view would save more by loosing the other person than my husband. They are both on 3 months and would get statutory redundancy payments, only difference is my husband will have been there 4 years the other person less than a year.
