Whatever you do, don't by them from the touts that put signs up within a mile or two of the site. (normally at roundabouts and pub car parks). When I went last year some people were prevented from entering because they were fake tickets...
You could wait for one (or more) of the national newspapers to do a free ticket offer (bogoff). The Sun almost always does it (it's the only time I buy The Sun!).
I must say I agree with your thoughts. It is a shame you cannot simply buy a visit only ticket (so you can visit the gardens which is something I never have time to do)
