I'd never heard of this before, and neither had my husband. Apparently at the time, survivors and the media were asked not to publicise it, because it would've affected morale.
...but yes, I agree - it's taken way too long. I would've thought that something like (a memorial) should've been erected in the 60s at least (understandably, rebuilding efforts would've concentrated on housing in the 40s and 50s).
