Still don't see where the meter bit comes from in 5d, but there are other clues in this crossword which seem even more obscure

bar ometer perhaps meter is short for meteorological
only a guess...

and maybe as it's Irish the meter becomes O'Meter. It works better than the blah blah clue though

I know, Emmie. It just doesn't seem to all fit together. Having said that sometimes these RTE ones hit you later- like The Snowman one which I couldn't see at first

I have got in bother with criticising RTE clues before but I do find many perplexing.
