CID is a specialist post within the police service. Normally a PC must have 2yrs experience before applying. The training is carried out in-house but to a national competency level and takes up to 12months. During this period, trainee detectives (TDC's) sit exams and must demonstrate the ability to investigate serious category crime: burglary, robbery, S18/S20 assaults (GBH) etc. To get on the foundation course the candidate must apply in writing and sit an interview board. At the conclusion of the 12month period the TDC has a final interview before being "promoted" to Detective Constable (DC). Experienced DC's will investigate murders, extortion, kidnap etc - under an SIO (Senior Investigating Officer)
In answer to your question, CID don't hate uniform. Historically CID see themselves as superior investigators and perhaps look down on their uniform counterparts. Often criminals who see themselves as 'players' won't even speak with uniform, only CID. Ask most veterans of the department and they'll tell you it's not the job it once was. Some have even considered returning to uniform duties (some have to if they've upset someone, or worse!!)
However, being a detective always has and always will be perceived by most as being the key to a successful police career. TV dramas tend to ham up the so called 'hatred' between uniform and CID but that just isn't the case.
