Hi my cat has just given birth to 5 kittens can you tell me if it is normal for the umbilical cord to be long she would not really sever them. there cords are about 2 inches long

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Sounds pretty normal to me. Not all mums, wether they be cats, rabbits etc, will sever the cords themselves. As already said just keep an eye on them, and keep an eye on mum. Make sure she does start eating and drinking in the next day or so. She'll need her energy to feed those kits.

If they are that long, you might want to shorten them up. If they get cought on something, such as another kittens foot and get pulled off, you could have a HUGE problem on your hands. You can trim them with some clean sissors, to even a 1/2 inch. It shouldnt bleed, but if it does, just tie off the end with a piece of floss.
