Door bell goes, we go to door (not instantly but within a minute), no-one there. A few times.

Could it be set off by someone in the street operating their remote car alarm?

Yes it can, V annoying.
I might add that there may be a choice of frequencies selectable on your doorbell which might help.
My neighbour and I had the same doorbell and both would chime when either house had someone ring the doorbell. Have any of your neighbours got the same doorbell? Wireless one obviously.
Sounds more like some little imp is playing Knocky Nine Doors.
j0nb0y, I know someone who has the same problem.
I bought a new doorbell a few weeks ago and it's gone off 3 times and there's nobody there.
My car key fob is on the same frequency as our door bell as well - much to my good lady's annoyance. :))
Yes it's happened to us several times - and on occasions it has changed the ringing tune too!

Thanks all, good to know I’m not barmy yet.
As suggested by douglas, there may be a choice of frequencies on your doorbell. If so, the bell's instruction manual will indicate how to alter the frequency.

However if you have lost the manual , you might be lucky and find a free download of instructions from the following link :-

Hans.
Don’t have a problem with mine. A £5 Jobie from Home Bargains.
I think that sometimes a fire engine or ambulance. Blues and twos horns or radios will set them off
Ours does that as well, it seems to be at roughly the same time late evening. Something is obviously setting it off, most annoying though.
Never had this problem with the old technology.
Blimey, I thought I saw a ... I did I did!
Scratching there eh!!
What's that got to do with doorbells?
Quite!
