What is the law with regards to phone tapping & internet, email

How easy is it for your phone to be tapped or internet to be monitored, e-mails ,surfing etc by relevant authorities and also do they have to gain permission from your service provider, also does the service provider have a right to tell you if you ask them.....

It just concerns me in this day and age that authorities can invade our privacy too easily and I would like to know.

not sure legally, but rest assured, if they want to, the relevant authorities can and will tap your phone/ read e-mails and anything else they want
