Louie,Louie was only banned in a few states and by various companies, that was early 60's. Link Wray's "Rumble" which was an instrumental was from 58,that also was banned in some states and some radio companies, but didn't hit No1 here.
Plenty of records banned by various radio stationson both sides of Atlantic, but not banned throughout a country as far as I can find. Hope someone as better luck

Louie Louie was much later anyway. (1964)
1958 no. 1s were: Great Balls of Fire / Jailhouse Rock / Story of My Life (Michael Holliday) / Magic Moments / Whole Lotta Woman / Who's Sorry Now / On the street where you live / All I have to do is dream / When / Carolina Moon or Stupid Cupid / It's all in the game / Hoots Mon / It's only make believe.
Wasn't Elvis banned in some states? Doesn't have to be a British song does it? Thinking about it, it only needed to be no.1 in Britain.
