When I use the close bracket sign eg. ) on an email I get a picture of a mug, as in drinking, or sometimes a devil's face. What's going on ? Is it sinister ? What can I do about it ?

Thanks all.

I get that sometimes on certain things, it's taking it as a shortcut to an emoticon - I get round it by using [ ] instead.

Maybe someone can tell you how to change something in your settings.
It would help to know how you're composing your email (and on what type of device). Are you using an email client (such as Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird or the Windows 10 Mail app) on a PC, or webmail on a PC, or the default Android email app on a phone, or a different Android email app on a phone, or an iPhone or . . . etc, etc, etc.

It makes a difference!

Sorry, Chris, I forgot the basic info.

It's Windows 7 on a PC and it seems to happen when I use Windows Live Mail.

Sorry if I seemed a bit grumpy in my post above, Derek, but email questions are nearly always a nightmare to answer on AB because we're usually fumbling in the dark. At least the information you've now provided is a lot better than the "I just click on it" response I've had from people in the past ;-)

See if this helps:

Your computer is trying to tell you something. ;-D
