This would have been easy(ish) to me years ago, but now I'm stumped. My grandchildren have asked me to make a 3 x 3 grid with the columns labelled a, b, & c. The rows numbered 1, 2 & 3.
Now using the numbers 1 - 9 make row number 2 twice and row number 3 three times that of row number 1.
Now I don't know if I'm being tested (in which case I'm cheating) or if they don't know how to do it themselves!! They wont tell me.
Anyway it's driving me nuts.
What is the solution and is there an easy way (formula) for working this type of puzzle out?

Don't know how this would work e.g where would you put No.5? If you double or treble it the answer is greater than 9.
Similarly you can't divide it by 2 or 3.
Am I reading the qn wrongly?

I don't know ellie. My head is swimming.
Row 2 has to be double the total of row one. Row three has to be three times the total of row one. Those words are just coming back to me so often that I can no longer start to work it out.
They aren't winding me up........I think!

Rather than starting with 123 for the top row I started with the maximum possible value which was 333 (as that would make the bottom row 999). of course 333 isn't permitted, nor is 332, 331 or 330. So the first possible number working backwards is 329. That didn't quite work, nor did 328- but 327 did

Hi PP. I was lucky to come into this quite late after work and made the assumption that as previous posters had probably tried the lower numbers first for the top row I should try the later ones first.

Thanks, Murphysrocks- I did wonder if there might be other solutions. I set up a spreadsheet this morning (dead easy- took about 30 seconds) and started to eliminate some columns (eg those ending in 5 on first row or any rows with repeated digits) but got bored after a minute and thought I'd try it later.
Imlostagain may now be able to throw the challenge back at the grandchildren
