I have barely traveled and now I am disabled I'm not likely to; but my best friend is desperate to visit New York. I would love him to be able to go and do what I never did, and I would like to buy him a plane ticket for his 30th birthday. However, I have no clue about the rest of the costs- where to stay, how much is a cheap but okay hotel etc? I guess I'm looking at around 4 days. If anyone has been I would love to hear your experiences.

New York hotels aren't cheap but it's worth looking at Airbnb.

Booking.com is another option, particularly if you are not on Facebook and can't be bothered with supplying airbnb with a photograph of yourself, personal history, blood and urine samples, etc. just to be allowed to contact those offering accommodation for some basic information.....

I have been to New York and other places around the world, I have found that Trailfinders are very helpful indeed and I'm sure that they would offer you a package, flight and hotel included. Try giving them a call, they are very helpful, 020 7368 1200. Good luck.

It's more than 20 years since we were there so price info would be pointless, save to say that it was expensive but, what a place.
Everything you imagine it will be and more. Brash, spectacular, grating, strangely familiar through seeing it so often on TV and film, easy to see why people love New York.
We'll get back some day. :)

My youngest daughter is going to New York in November ( she will be there for her birthday ), staying in Times Square. No idea how much it has cost though, it was part of her Christmas present from her boyfriend.

Tony...tell your daughter to save her pennies. N.Y. ain't cheap right now...I was shocked when I went 2 months ago. I have friends who went a month ago. They did all the touristy things, and blew all their cash.
Scarlett...if you are including excursions in your prezzie do pick and choose carefully so your friend gets the best memories.
