If a turtle doesn't have a shell, is he homeless or naked?

I just wondered? Me and my friends at uni were discussing this. I always thought a turtles shell was his home, not his clothes?

I asked whether it would be naked or homeless if it were to happen. Doesn't matter that I've never seen a turtle without its shell!

Can't turtels live without a shell? I didn't know that!
Considering that turtles are attached to their shells, they would certainly be dead without it.
And shouldn't this Q be in Animals & Nature?
