An excellent point.
If you notice - and I am sure you have - Mr Cole has not said that he has been sacked, he has said that his contract has not been renewed.
The media, on the other hand, has thrown up its collective hands in horror and shrieked 'Sacked!!!!!!from its headlines, because that is what sells papers.
I left my employment last May. I didn't get so much as a 'good luck and thanks' from my employers after forty-three years' service.
Was I seriously put out? Yes.
Was I 'sacked'? No!!!!

I am sorry to hear about your own experience, Andy, but it does seem quite different, and not really relevant to the thread. 'Sacked' is not being used in its literal sense, but to convey where the blame lies. The media, and I tend to agree with them, think that it was his attitude that got him 'sacked'.
Oh well, he could still be saved !.
Piers Morgan is on the case.

Fairlight - // I think we the viewers should have been able to have our say with a public vote. //
I think that takes the notion of 'public participation' rather too far.
Having a vote on who dances well is one thing - all you need is to offer your opinion based on what you think.
Having a vote on who has a contract or not, in other words, is able to work and earn money, should be based on a lot more than a casual opinion, and no background information, or the credentials to decide.
