Mr BD got one this morning. Deleted it straight away. HMRC would not know his email address so obviously a scam.

No, it's a regular scam - I posted about it a few weeks ago.
Don't click on any links and forward it to HMRC at:

https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/reporting-fraudulent-emails

They'll acknowledge it and confirm it's a scam.

Ick in 22 years of working in HMRC we are continually told we do not communicate via email. The chat system yes but not email.

Indeed, for personal contact about specific cases. But HMRC do send out emails, for example reminders about self assessment.
Just in case anyone might think ALL emails purporting to come from HMRC are not genuine. Sadly, some are :-)
