Steroids And Appetite
9 Answers
What is it about taking steroids that increases my appetite and makes me peckish about four / five hours after eating a hearty meal ? I have taken them for 12 years now and although I am only on a low dose, it gets me down snacking a lot. My GP has tried weaning me off of them completely , easier said than done. He also said they were the culprit behind my eating habits. Anybody else take them and find the same ?

Yup, the steroid munchies!
I tend to have them injected but was put on pred tablets this morning, 8 a day so bracing myself, although I feel so crap I'm more bothered about feeling better.
I have inbetween steroids periods where I try to get good routines in place and don't eat so much so I can't eat too much when the steroid munchies hit and find out of sight (or easy reach) can help too. One of my downfalls is cereal bars I have at work as better than chocolate - if I eat one and there are others left...too tempting! I find fruit good, if I stick something like a punnet of grapes in front of me I'll just go through them - got told off by dietician though as apparently shouldn't have loads of fruit in one go.
Not much helps the weight gain though and puffy face.

Yes, it does make me feel down. Just feel fat and puffy and frumpy at the moment.
I try to eat well and not overeat, I'm quite obsessive over reading food labels a lot of the time. It doesn't seem to make much of a difference though.
I get paranoid at work about people seeing my eat and thinking I eat too much which is daft really as lunch wise I tend to have a low fat sandwich, zero calorie jelly and maybe a low fat yoghurt for lunch and use fruit and low calorie cereal bars for snacking. I'm worse on really bad days when I might have an emergency Snickers for keeping going purposes.
