1. Damage to anothers property is caused and you were unable to provide your details at the scene.
2. Personal Injury is caused to another person (including any passengers in your vehicle) and you were unable to exchange details and produce your Certificate of Insurance at the scene.
In either of these cases you must report the matter to the police as soon as possible and in any case within 24 hours. If injury is caused and you are unable to produce your Certificate of Insurance to the police when reporting the matter, you must produce it at a nominated police station within 7 days.
Failing to stop and/or report is an offence under Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act and is one of the very few motoring offences which carry a custodial sentence (though this would not be invoked in a case such as yours where, presumably, you may simply be late in reporting the facts). It also carries a minimum imposition of 5 penalty points.
