I have a smart meter for gas and electricity with E-on. After the terrible service shown by
E-on over this last weekend, I want to change provider. Is this possible even tho they installed the smart meters?

Your right to switch energy providers is unaffected by having a smart meter from E.On but you might need to get a new meter fitted after doing so: http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/experts/article-4223724/If-energy-providers-need-new-smart-meter.html

there has been a lot of media comment smart meters. last time i tried to switch the new provider would not accept th e switch. the second one did the switch without comment but as i understand it is now known as a dum meter. ie it does not work. it shows the meter redings but none of the smart functions will work until all the meters in the system are made compatible. Just go ahead with the change.
