the blackfly have invaded my dahlias. does anyone have any tips for getting shot of them without resorting to pesticides.

I use Top Rose spray for mine and it works a treat but maybe weak washing up liquid solution or mild vinegar and water in a trigger bottle will put them off. Good luck!
I had blackfly on my dahlia and squirted soapy water all over them - it works really well and stops them staying attached - the washing up liquid makes the leaves too slippery for them to cling on.
