ER Theme Music

Can anyone tell me if the theme music for ER is based on an earlier piece of music? For years I've been positive it's a remix of a tune that was used in a film or sports coverage or something but noone knows what I'm on about!

James Newton Howard wrote the music for the ER theme tune, it is an original composition for the show but he has written lots of film scores (see link) so maybe it just sounds like one of his other compositions. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0006133/
