Is it not time scrap this lot of lord and ladies as most times you see them half of them are fast asleep, it must cost the country an awful lot of money and what purpose do they serve?

It does appear outdated and from what I see from other forum users from the EU, us and other places we’ve a laughing stock.

Time for a younger “new and improved” overhaul of the government, judges, law enforcers etc...
Are they asleep or are they just listening to the speakers in the back of their seat?
You ask what their purpose is.

There may well be a better system in the future.
IMO the old dears do serve a purpose otherwise we may have a dictatorship.
(I do stress it's just my opinion)
They do get paid a too hefty daily allowance tho.
hear hear what we do is ennoble failed or past it ex politicians. the sight of CofE bishops and archbishops debating our laws is pathetic, what percentage of the UK's population actively practice in CofE establishments? yet they presume to tell us what to do, their place is in the pulpit NOT our government! we need an elected 2nd house. in australia there is a voter habit of not electing the same party in the senate as has been elected to the house of representatives, so an automatic checks and balances are in place.
In the US, it's quite common for the same party to hold both houses of Congress and the presidency. Given the UK's tribal voting patterns that would probably happen here too.
