Should There Be A Non Pc Tv Channel?

Someone should set up a new TV channel which is not afraid to show TV shows from the past that are now considered 'offensive' such as Love the Neighbour, It aint half hot mum, Black and White Minstrel Show, Benny Hill etc. Or perhaps commission some new non PC shows, how refreshing that would be. Perhaps it could be called NonPCTV. What do others think?

There are some practical problems with your suggestion. The early editions of The Black and White Minstrel Show were transmitted live, so there were never any recordings. Later editions were recorded onto videotape but it was horrendously expensive so the tapes were wiped and re-used. So, once again, there are no complete episodes available for showing.

Most tapes of The Benny Hill Show were also wiped, so little remains. However there's this for any die-hard fans:

The ITV companies didn't wipe as much material as the BBC did, so most (all?) of Love Thy Neighbour still exists. However it's freely available on Youtube, so there would seem to be little point in having a dedicated TV channel for it (and for similar programmes).

Another practical problem would be finding funding for your proposed channel, Dave50. Not many advertisers would be prepared to risk possible boycotts of their products from customers who were opposed to the existence of the channel.

The beauty now is that you can access such a wide range of viewing from round the globe - if you wish to go back decades then as Buen says if programmes were on tape they'd be accessible.

The commercial risk of setting up a Channel like you mention doesn't sound too good an enterprise.

Try and get a backer.

I find enough of interest and also jollity without too much problem but then I have hobbies too.

There is a TV Channel called "Talking Pictures TV" that shows old films and some old TV programs. It is available on Sky, Virgin, Freeview etc.

Many are films that have been "lost" for many years but now rediscovered and digitized to improve the quality.

They show films (UK and USA films) from a number of eras - 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s.

They also show TV programs from 1960s and 1970s, British and American (Bonaza for example!).

I am a fan of comedy and love watching some of the old comedy films from the 1950s and 1960s that I have never seen before. It is fun to find an actor playing a small part who went on later to be famous (Terry Scott, Tommy Cooper etc).

Because the films are of a certain era and often filmed in the streets of London, Brighton, Manchester etc it is also interesting to see what those cities were like in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as the clothes, the cars and so on.

I am not saying all the films are good and some have not aged well, but many of them are very interesting historical documents.

Sometimes they do put a warning at the start of a film or TV programs saying this was made in a time of different social attitudes.

A specific channel would get a reputation pushed by the PC zealots. Normal folk would be painted as if they were evil. (Compare with the situation of the English flag and how many now relate it to racist groups.) Much better that existing channels got less uptight, and stop pandering to those who think one must not say, "Boo", to a goose.
